The Process of Social Participation in Retired Middle-Aged: Rediscovery of Meaning and Strategies

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to rediscover the meaning of social participation and what strategies are needed to promote social participation by exploring the experience of social participation process for retired mid dle-aged people. To this end, focus group interviews were conducted with 11 retired middle-aged people between the ages of 50 and 64, and thematic analysis was used to explore the meaning and strategy of the social participation process. As a result of the study, 6 themes and 23 sub-themes were derived. The themes are ¡®My expectations of a young man with a young heart: the emergence of worries and expectations¡¯, ¡®Incomplete fulfillment of social integration¡¯, ¡®The second phase of life: showcasing one¡¯s strengths¡¯, ¡®Social activities that fulfill specific desires¡¯, ¡®Exploration: embracing new challenges and breaking away from established paths¡¯, ¡®The importance of social support for a fresh start¡¯. Based on the results of this study, we expanded the interest in social participation of the retired middle-aged and made practical suggestions for successful social participation.
